Editor-in-Chief of Middle Eastern Studies Journal - Jordan
This report addresses the determinants and challenges of Jordan's regional role in light of its relationship with the United States. It was based on extensive and in-depth dialogues with a core group of former Jordanian statesmen, experts, and strategists. The dialogue and discussions focused on the Kingdom's regional role in achieving national interests, considering the nature of relations with the United States.
The report presents the approaches of three distinguished figures: His Excellency Professor Ahmad Obeidat, former Jordanian Prime Minister; His Excellency Dr. Jawad Al-Anani, former economist and Minister of Foreign Affairs; and His Excellency Major General Mahmoud Erdisat, former Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense College. Their insights, based on their extensive experience and knowledge, provide valuable perspectives on Jordan's regional role.
The report briefs the discussions and addresses the factors influencing Jordan's regional role, its challenges, and the requirements to face them. Moreover, it addresses the philosophy of diversifying options in Jordan's regional relations in light of its special relationship with the United States and its determinants.
The report provides several basic conclusions, the most important of which are: 1- Jordanian national security is fundamentally linked to Arab national security, 2- Jordan is more concerned than ever before with maintaining its regional role on Arab issues, most notably the Palestinian issue, despite the challenges and attempts to bypass or even circumvent its role. This commitment to its regional responsibilities is a testament to Jordan's dedication to Arab issues. 3- The priority of strengthening the internal national front and enhancing the path of political reform, building a state of good governance, investing national and human resources, and addressing economic imbalances.
On another level, the report concluded that Jordan needs to manage its relationship with the United States within basic frameworks, the most important of which are: 1- Jordan looks at itself, its position, and its capabilities with a balanced view without belittling or exaggerating, 2- This relationship poses challenges and opportunities for Jordan in exercising its regional role, 3- This relationship does not prevent Jordan from weaving multiple relationships and following the theory of diversifying options with other international and regional parties; as Jordan must achieve security and stability for the Kingdom and enhances its Arab depth and regional role at the same time.
